Curator Statement

We are living in an age of rational disillusionment, in which dreams and visions have taken on a very special significance. In this world, are utopias the only realistic option we have left? There are periods that break apart and bring in their wake a very special opportunity for action: the time of intermediacy. It’s a time with no apparent purpose or predetermination: a rare and valuable time, in which everything seems possible and which, alas, ends very quickly. In these intervening periods, decisions must be made, with no safety net and without venturing to look too far into the future. These decisions do not require calculation or reason, but rather intuitive action. Dreams become spaces that are worth occupying and later defending. The space for reflection, which we so often dream of, is a house without doors, a structure into openness, a utopian architecture through which a powerful wind of free-flowing communication can blow.
The crossing of boundaries has always been inherent in art. Open, experimental, artistic activity provokes new perspectives and ways of thinking. For their continuous development and renewal, art and society need open spaces in which new ideas and projects can be developed. Such spaces are also offered by international artists’ residences. The exhibition project seeks to create temporary situations for artistic work and bring them into dialogue with each other and with the public.

For more than twenty years, planners in Plüschow have been working on a model for an artists’ residence that allows artists to engage in the “act of thinking” and provides an opportunity for “dwelling in the gap between past and future”, as described by Hannah Arendt (1. Every year, several artist-in-residence grants are offered. Visual artists from Germany and abroad are eligible to apply. Opportunities for artistic experimentation are offered in the form of ateliers and workshops, as well as projects. In the selection of artists for a residency at Mecklenburgisches Künstlerhaus Schloss Plüschow, importance is placed on the artist’s work and its relevance to the social environment, to current social issues and to history and architecture.
